What is a leased line?
What is a leased line is a common question, with leased line services becoming increasingly popular.
Essentially, a leased line is a dedicated internet connection that is provided exclusively for your organisation. This is very different to business broadband services, which can involve sharing resources with many users in your area.
Unlike typical business broadband - a leased line is delivered to you as a dedicated fibre optic cable to your premises that does not share resources with other users. For this reason it is often called a fibre leased line.
The leased line is then presented as an ethernet connection ready to connect to your internal network. A business leased line will typically provide the following benefits.
- High speeds - 100mb leased line is most common with 1GB leased line and faster now available
- Dedicated leased line - no slowdowns from other local users or peak times
- Symmetric bandwidth - get the same upload speed as download speed
- Low latency - great for VoIP and Video conferencing applications
- Resiliency - no line or copper faults to worry about plus optional backup circuit failover
- SLA - Service Level Agreement gives a typical fix target of 6 hours depending on provider

Internet Leased Line services are the most obvious application for a Leased Line. Having an internet leased line will give your users fast, consistent performance and low latency for internet use. It is a dedicated ethernet connection.
Leased line internet access is an excellent solution for cloud applications such as Microsoft 365 - Microsoft Teams - Zoom Meetings - Virtual Desktop - and telephone systems such as VoIP Phone System solutions.
However, Leased Line services are also very useful for internal applications such as site to site VPN - VPN access for remote workers - work from home users - and more.

Leased Line Broadband
Leased Line Broadband is also popular. Leased Line broadband services combine some of the benefits of a proper leased line with cheaper business broadband infrastructure.
A leased line broadband connection therefore gives you peace of mind at a lower cost.
FTTC Ethernet services - also known as a GEA Leased Line - Ethernet over Fibre - Ethernet over FTTC - or EoFTTC - combine cheaper business fibre broadband technology with dedicated bandwidth and an improved fix time SLA.
In terms of EoFTTC vs Leased Line - a proper Leased Line will always be more resilient because it does not use copper wiring to enter the premises. Leased line speeds can also be much faster. However, leased line cost is higher.

Fibre Leased Line
Fibre Leased Line technology gets its name from the fibre optical cable that carries your fibre leased line in to your premises. Fibre leased line UK services provide a dedicated connection, and we assist with planning and site survey.
Once the fibre leased line has entered your premises, it is terminated on to carrier equipment and presented to you as a regular internet connection. This can then be connected to your internal network such as a firewall.
Specialist Leased Line options are also available. For example, point to point leased line connectivity for a point to point connection - and dark fibre / dark fibre services for failover.
